A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
Today's passage talked a lot about honor. Honor for those He has placed in some form of authority, guardianship over us.
Reading the word 'bondservant' or 'slave' in the Bible can immediately cause us to think of modern-day slavery such as what happened with the Atlantic slave trade or human trafficking. Maybe the question may arise: does God or the Bible condone slavery? In the Bible, when we read about someone being a bondservant, the word is more attached to the person laboring for someone else to pay off a debt or in order to make a living - employer/employee type relationships. This was not an abusive relationship or done by force or coercion as the term is more associated with in today's world. There were guidelines for bondservants in the Old Testament that provided protection and standards for how bondservants were to be treated. Freedom or release from debt or contract from being a bondservant was common after 7 years, paying off debt, if the master abused his servant or on the year of Jubilee. Just some good information to know historically as it is common for people to associate God and the Bible with supporting slavery in the way that we know it today.
But getting back to honor. God calls us to honor our elders and employers. It's one of the few things He encourages competition in: "Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor." Romans 12:10 If you have a competitive nature, this verse is for you! I am so thankful for the elder team God has put in place here at Paradox that serves to Govern, Guard & Guide our spiritual family. They pray for us, care for us, listen to God on our behalf, lead us and watch over us. Let's take some time to honor our Elder Team today for all they do for our Paradox church family. - Jessica Glenn

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
We all know the golden rule: do for others as you want them to do for you. Ruth is a shining example of this philosophy in action. When her husband died, she could have, and many would say should have, gone back to her family for support. But, out of compassion for her aging mother-in-law, knowing that without a man in her life in that time/culture she would struggle mightily, Ruth left the security of her home to travel back with Naomi. Golden rule move for sure! And what happened? As she was gleaning food from Naomi’s relative’s field she was inquired about by Boaz, the lord of that land. It was likely her youth and looks that had him inquire, but once he found out about the sacrifices she made for Naomi, that is when Boaz started ordering preferential treatment for her ,which eventually led to their marriage. Boaz recognized that she was living the golden rule, or what James calls “pure and undefiled religion…looking after orphans and widows in their distress”.
I would like to introduce a new, slightly lesser rule. Let’s call it the silver rule: do for others what you see them doing for others. Boaz was inspired by Ruth. Her selfless actions led him to do what he could do…which was actually more than what Ruth could do. Basically God multiplied Ruth’s efforts and as a result Naomi was cared for. And, Ruth was “comforted and encouraged” by God through Boaz.
So, let’s be like Ruth. When we see an “orphan or widow” in need, aka someone who is not able to fully provide for themselves, let’s be golden rule-followers and step in. Let’s do it sacrificially, as Jesus demonstrated…not for any reason other than it is the right thing to do.
Let’s also be silver rule-followers like Boaz. If we are inspired by someone else sacrificing for others, let’s ask how we can jump in to multiply their efforts. As they are being hands and feet to others, let’s be appendages to them, providing comfort and encouragement from the Lord. - Mike Nank

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
If you’ve been around Paradox at all, you’ve likely heard the phrase “Multi-Generational Family on Mission.” That’s who we believe God has called us to be, and how we try to live. Church isn’t just a place we go or a service we attend - it’s a family. And nowhere is that more evident than in Paul’s “fatherly advice” to Timothy in today’s reading. He tells Timothy to treat older men like fathers, younger men like brothers, older women like mothers, and younger women like sisters. Now, I don’t know the family dynamics of every home represented by the people reading this today, or what your relationship is like with your father, mother, sister or brother. What I do know is that Paul is emphasizing how we interact with each other, and that he’s talking about a lot more than being polite; he’s urging us to build a culture of honor and love. In our fast-paced lives, it's easy to get caught up in our own stuff. But this scripture nudges us to slow down and notice the people around us (yes, even our familiar, comfortable, and sometimes irritating family or church family) — especially those who might need a little extra care. Paul specifically mentions widows—those who are vulnerable and may need the support of their church family. But the same principle can be applied as a more general reminder not to forget those who may feel alone or overlooked. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, lending a helping hand, or just being present, God calls us to actively love and care for those in need. When we treat others with respect, kindness, and honor, we're reflecting God's love in a powerful way. After all, we’re family. So today, let’s ask ourselves: Who can I encourage, uplift, or support today? How can you I a blessing to someone in my family or church family who might need it? Let them know you care (why not stop and do it now?) Let’s be the hands and feet of Jesus, leading by showing love in practical, everyday ways. Let's keep loving like family! - Dave Kubiak

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
Focused. That’s what comes to my mind reading 1 Timothy 4, Paul as a coach to Timothy running beside him saying “Train yourself in Godliness! Keep your head up! Don’t get caught up with silly issues!” I was at a class a few weeks ago and we were going over being an “athlete” or a “spectator” because the Bible often urges us to “train ourselves” or “run the race” which is very athletic vernacular! In this class we were all talking about our urge to be a spectator and clock out after Sunday service, after work, etc. The thing is reading this passage it’s IMPOSSIBLE to think the Bible supports such a thought! We may not have Paul (at least in the way Timothy did) but we have the whole library of scripture that gives us encouragement like: “Pay close attention to your life and your teaching; persevere in these things, for in doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers.” Let’s ask ourselves today in what way can we “train ourselves” in the ways of Jesus today! - Matteo McGill

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
As I read through today’s reading, I felt like Jesus showed me that in order to have the type of character laid out in 1 Timothy 3, what is written 1 Peter 1 is what will form that in each of us. I would bet that all of us desire the character traits in 1 Timothy 3- being self controlled, gentle, able to manage our household competently, faithful, and so on. We aren’t born with these qualities- any parent will tell you that their child was not born with self control or gentleness! But the way we learn to have these godly qualities is through 1 Peter 1, in verses 6-7 it says “You rejoice in this, even though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials so that the proven character of your faith—more valuable than gold which, though perishable, is refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” Did you catch that? Through trials and grief, our character is formed. God uses the hard, painful things we through to make us more like him. Of course, it would be great if we could only have good days, without any pain or hardship- but when I really look back on my life- the person I’ve become (& am becoming) has been formed by going through hard things, with Jesus by my side, showing me how to act and respond (and often I’ve learned by doing things the wrong way many times first.) So today, let’s practice thanking God for the hard things we’ve gone through (I know- it’s not easy!)…trusting that He is using all of it to mature and grow us and make us more like Him. - Gwyn Kubiak

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
There is a progression that happens as we read through the scriptures for today. In 1 Timothy 2 we see how God wants us to live together in godliness and holiness. He wants so much for us to be saved that he sent His Son, who gave himself as ransom for all people. I can get on board with that - it feels pretty easy to me to live holy, right up until I'm faced with a challenging teenager, a road raging driver, or maybe even a disagreement with my spouse (even though we never disagree….). The call to godliness doesn't come without challenges. As we move to Hebrews 4:14-16 we see how Jesus has empathy for us because He has a unique understanding of the challenges we face. [15] “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.” Jesus helps us understand that it is okay to struggle, as long as we remember that in our struggle we can go to Him and receive His grace and mercy. Psalm 62 further reinforces that God is our hope, our strength and our refuge. [5] “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. [6] Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.” It's a powerful reminder that our hope and stability come from Him, and this allows us to navigate life's challenges with confidence. We can trust in God's character even in our imperfection. This allows us to not only deepen our faith, but also extend that same grace to others. - Liz Holland

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
”I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord’, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.” -David
”Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.” - Paul
It is refreshing to see these titans of faith, David and Paul, rejoice in today’s readings as they declare their faith. They both acknowledge their sin and their need of a Savior. (Of course, Paul had a name to attach to the one who forgives sin…Jesus, but both are praising God.) They both are fully humbled and grateful to be forgiven and accepted by God. David lived about 1000 years before Paul. I love the way God preserved the message of his grace and forgiveness through the generations between these men.
I love the way this message was around since the very beginning, when Adam and Eve disobeyed God and were not destroyed, but promised redemption.
I love the way Paul is passing this legacy of faith on to Timothy, so that he can carry the gospel of Jesus on to the next generation.
I love the way the good news has spread far and wide, to all people, from Timothy until today.
And..I love the ways that WE get to now be part of this heritage. We can share the same message to the children of this next generation:
—> “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
—> “But God demonstrates His love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
—> “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ.”
Let us join the millions of voices since the dawn of man who have joyfully proclaimed these life-giving truths.

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
It’s Labor Day. A day we step back to recognize what’s been accomplished to bring life into the sometimes dehumanizing work that fills many of our days. It’s a day of well earned rest. Sometimes life feels like a whirlwind of rules, expectations, and endless to-do lists. Many days, I wake up to a list of 40-something things already on my to-do list. The day is so busy I barely get up (or look up for that matter), but at the end of it I still feel unaccomplished. I long for clarity, simplicity… FOCUS. That’s why I love Paul’s instruction to Timothy in this first chapter. There’s a simple, clear message: it’s all about faith and love. In essence, he says to keep the main thing the main thing. Don’t get distracted by the non-essentials. Don’t get stirred up by the unimportant. Don’t get dragged into the chaos. Today’s reading reminds us that faith isn’t about getting everything perfect. - Jesus already did that. It’s about trusting God, loving Him with everything we’ve got, and letting that love flow to others.
You can go through every motion today - but, as Deuteronomy calls us to - loving God with all our heart, soul, and strength aren’t actually at the heart and soul of it—we’re misguided. We can be absolutely perfect in every project and task the day brings - but Romans 10 reminds us that salvation isn’t about doing everything right - receiving Jesus’ perfect sacrifice for our imperfection is what’s really at the heart of the matter. So today, let’s keep the main thing the main thing: Focus (really!) on loving God and allowing that love to overflow into every person, plan and project this day will bring. Stay focused on Jesus, and make it a great one… or maybe, go back to bed and rest in His love today. He’s done the work for you! - Dave Kubiak

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
This series has been all about the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the third person' of the Trinity, God actively working in our world and within the Church today. The Spirit is our guide, leading us into all truth and helping us grow to be more like Christ. We know the Holy Spirit is present when we confess Jesus as Lord and are drawn into a deeper love and unity with God, ourselves, our neighbors, and all creation. We recognize the truths taught by the Holy Spirit when they align with the Scriptures. In Acts 2, Holy Spirit comes down on Jewish believers during Pentecost, fulfilling God's promise to dwell among His people (Acts 2:17–18). Throughout the book of Acts, the Spirit empowers believers to live as God's family, bear spiritual fruit, and spread the gospel from Jerusalem to Judea, Samaria, and beyond.
Take a moment today to look back on your notes from this study or revisit Acts 2. What stands out to you about the Holy Spirit? The early Church? The spread of the gospel? - Dave Kubiak

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
With summer vacation coming to an end, it brings mixed feelings. I find myself stressing just thinking about co-workers, kids, and the daily chaos that ensues… I work at an elementary school. I have been praying about this school year like I do every year, and God never fails to show up. On one hand I would love to stay in the comfort of my own home, planning activities and staying caught up on laundry. On the other, I know there’s so much more He has in store when I step into a new season fully trusting in Him, and eagerly waiting for the next opportunity I get to show His love, grace, kindness, and CONFIDENCE. (Sorry, I had to yell that last one to make sure I could hear myself.) Paul demonstrates so much confidence in Acts 28. He was hitting some pretty sweet spots where he experienced brotherhood, joy-filled ministry, and comfort. Then a south wind blew and brought him back to Rome, a place where he was once in chains. He felt lead to stay for 2 whole years after this and, despite the mixed feelings and arguing he witnessed as a result of the truth he was trying to preach to the Jewish leaders there, he continued on full of the Holy Spirit and humility - ready to proclaim the kingdom of God to anyone that would come to him (v30-31). Today, let’s boldly and confidently step into the season God has for us. I’m praying for confidence like Paul, and for willing hearts to be committed to the mission God is preparing us for. - Rachel Hood

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
In Acts 27, After appealing to Caesar, we find Paul and some other prisoners on a journey to Rome. The voyage to Rome at this time of year was dangerous. Paul was apprehensive about the trip fearing that there would be injury and loss of life for himself and the crew. He was out-voted when he asked the Centurion in charge if the voyage could be postponed. So they set sail out to sea, but it didn’t take long for a storm to rise and cause the ship to be violently tossed about. The crew lost all hope of being saved. Despite facing the dangerous storm at sea, Paul remained steadfast in his faith. Paul addressed the men, telling them “Yet now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among, but only of the ship. For this very night there stood before me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship, and he said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And behold, God has granted you all those who sail with you.” ( Acts 27: 22-24) I am sure that Paul’s message was met with some skepticism from the men, after two weeks of constantly being driven across the sea, Paul urged everyone to eat and give thanks to God. Paul’s unwavering faith eventually filled the hearts of the men on board with hope. This a reminder that even we can be a source of hope for others and make a difference when faced with challenging times and circumstances.
The ship eventually ran aground and the men all made it safely to the island of Malta. The native people showed great kindness by making a fire to dry and warm the shipwrecked men. While Paul was gathering sticks to put on the fire, the next dilemma occurred! Paul was bitten by a viper, it clamped down on his hand and hung on. The natives were sure that Paul was a murderer and may have escaped justice from the sea, but now he was going to die from the snake bite. Lo and behold, Paul shook that snake off into the fire with no ill effects. The natives decided that Paul must be a god. After all of this, Paul ended up praying and laying hands on many ill people, he cured all who came to him. The people honored them by helping them set sail with whatever provisions they needed. In Mark 16: 17-18, Jesus tells His disciples that all who believe in His name will “Cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Paul’s faith in the word of God saved him and all who believe. So remember, no matter what storm in life you are facing, keep your faith in our Lord, for He is always with you. He is working all things for our good. Amen - Dawn Marie Custer

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
In today’s reading we have a very interesting interaction between Paul and a room of government officials. Paul is defending himself against accusations from Jewish leaders and now has the floor. He shares his personal testimony and the gospel of Jesus. The response by the two main officials involved is very interesting.
Festus’ reaction is confusion. He basically thinks Paul is nuts. “Lights from heaven…c’mon?”. Festus represents a group of people who are hard hearted and blind. There is no room in their world view for the presence of a loving Creator.
King Agrippa, being a Jew himself, is in a different spot. He likely held a belief in “the one true God”, but he was not quite ready to recognize that God as Jesus and open his heart to a relationship with him. Agrippa had a lot to lose from a worldly perspective to dive deeper into Paul’s story so he plays off Paul’s compelling arguments with sarcasm. “What, you thought you could turn me into a Christian that easily?”
I love Paul’s response in the face of this denial and resistance: “I wish before God, that whether easily or with difficulty, not only you but all who listen to me today might become as I am — except for these chains.” Paul’s heart, and I believe Jesus’, really shine through in this response. He earnestly desires that all people would accept the love of Christ, and not need to suffer the things Paul has to get there. But Paul knows, all the suffering is worth it for the chance to be with Jesus, and he is willing to suffer at the hands of doubters and haters at the chance that others may meet Jesus through his efforts.
I don’t know about you, but I am inspired by Paul. I wonder what would happen if all Christians were a little bit bolder. I say we find out together. - Mike Nank

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
Today, we are seeing an example of Godly character from Paul. His accusers fear change, and the authority of the land fears backlash. Paul fears no one. His faith is in God. He knows the truth and is proclaiming it, sharing the gospel of Jesus. The Jewish elders fear change. Let's be honest. Change is hard.
Have you ever dealt with a group or someone who didn't agree with you? This has been happening for decades - centuries even - and it is still happening today. I'm so thankful that God provides us with his knowledge and common sense. On my own, I'd be bitter and angry if faced with false accusations and wanting to argue in my own defense. But Gods way is better. Love your enemies and let them see God in you. We can rest assured that God holds our future. He protects his faithful followers. Let show character like Paul and stand for justice, knowing that God is our protector and will not abandon us, for he watches over his faithful followers. Have a blessed day, and lean on God for wisdom every day. - Marci Burk

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
In our reading in Jeremiah today I feel like my eyes were drawn to “WHEN THE SEVENTY YEARS FOR BABYLON ARE COMPLETE, I will attend to you and will confirm my promise concerning you to restore you to this place.” (The capitalization is mine.) God is a good Father - not for the fact that He gives us what we want, when we want it. But because He gives us good gifts WHEN they are good for us, not when we deem them necessary. Patience is something God has been really working into my heart over the past 5 years or so and wrapped up in patience is TRUST IN HIM! He is the Good Father; He is the Good Gift giver! Jeremiah 29:11 speaks of God’s ultimate plan for us which is GREAT! Sometimes, I think we forget that that promise was given to a people in captivity. I say all of this to say wherever you find yourself today… feeling far from God or jumping for joy in his presence - TRUST IN HIM! - Matteo McGill

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
The apostle Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 4 verse 9 that we are “persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down but not destroyed.” This pretty much frames how I have felt for the last month. On July 24th, DJ and I had to let his mom go to be with our lord. On Aug 15th, we had to put down Deann’s dog Casey. It’s been a devastating month to say the least and I have hardly felt empowered for anything, let alone serving the Kingdom of God.
That was all changed by two phone calls. One was from a pastor friend that I received just as I was getting home from Deann’s funeral. He had called to apologize for not being able to make it. In our conversation, he reminded me of a simple conversation that he and I had a few years ago. He was struggling with making the decision to accept God’s call to serve at a church as its pastor. Off the cuff, I told him that he had better make the decision quickly because there were plenty of others standing in line behind him ready to answer God’s call if he didn’t. Joe thanks me for the push of encouragement nearly every time I see him.
The other phone call came from someone I do Keryx prison ministry with. He called the night that we had to put the dog down to see how we were doing. He was asking about who the people he had met at the funeral were. He commented how awesome it was that Deann and I had touched the lives of that many people in our walk with Jesus. God was using him to remind me of verse 10 from 2 Corinthians 4 that says, “always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies.” Meaning that even in my tough times I still can find ways to share the love of Christ through my interactions with people and how I convey the love of Jesus to them.
Jesus empowered us through the great commission to spread the gospel of Jesus to all peoples. We pass this on through our interactions with the people we meet and encouraging them to give their life to Christ and become empowered themselves. Sometimes this is through conscious discipleship actions and sometimes it’s just through casual interactions. When was the last time you stopped to think of the people you have impacted as you journey along your walk with Jesus? Our Christian walk can sometimes almost feel unfulfilling since we don’t always get to witness the fruits of our labor. Crazy thing is, sometimes we don’t even realize the impact that we may have had on someone. When you pray, thank God for the empowerment of the great commission and ask him to look after those you impact both known and unknown. We planted the seed, now it's God’s turn to make that seed sprout and grow. God Loves You and So Do I - Scott Rose

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
Today's reading is full of affirmations and encouragement to us as believers as to our identity in Christ. Knowing who we are in Christ is so HUGE as believers and followers of Jesus because all of our actions come from a place of who we are. Growing in not just knowing my identity in Christ in my head but actually allowing the truth of my identity to set me free and influence how I live has been a process for me. What we read in Scripture is 100% true and inspired and given to us by God revealed to us by Holy Spirit so what He says about me I can trust and know is true for me. I love that what is said about our past being wiped clean and being freed from evil ways of thinking is a thing of the past. It's already been done! Not something that we are working on or achieving but has taken place giving us full confidence to go to Jesus boldly without fear or shame. Paul had such a secure sense of his identity and calling in Christ and we see is immense boldness on display in Acts today. He even says that he knows he's right before God and that drives the religious leaders crazy as having this certainty of Jesus' death, burial and resurrection and the new standing and position that gives us in Christ wasn't something they shared. How has or how would knowing your full identity in Christ impact how you live your life? We all need a reminder or who we are from time to time to root us and ground us again in Him. Ask Holy Spirit to speak to you today an identity piece that you need to hear and allow that truth to set your heart free to run today in His ways in a fresh way!
Psalm 119:32 "I run in the path of your commandments, for you have set my heart free." - Jessica Glenn

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
Why do we love exclusivity so much? Ads are peppered with products, services, and memberships that are “exclusive”. Why? Because it works. There is a part of us that likes the idea that we posses something or access to something that others don’t. It makes us feel special and the product/service we hold seems more important. In fact the more rare and exclusive the thing is, the more value we ascribe to it.
In today’s reading, Paul addresses a group of Jewish men and shares his testimony. They are leaning in quietly as Paul describes how he met Jesus on the road to Damascus, was blinded and healed, was baptized in the name of Jesus, and then given a new life mission: to share the good news of Jesus. The crowd is engaged and listening until Paul gets to one seemingly trivial part of his story. Because of his background as a Jewish leader who persecuted Christians, God sends Paul out to the Gentiles (non-Jews). THIS is the detail that sets the crowd into a tizzy. Not the claims of voices from heaven, or miraculous healing, or being baptized in Jesus’ name…but the fact that Paul went to invite GENTILES into relationship with the Living God…THAT is worthy of throwing dirt into the air and screaming murderous requests. Why? Because in the minds of those Jewish men, they alone are God’s people. He choose them in the past, so he should be exclusively their God.
But here’s the thing…it didn’t make God any less special that he chose to invite Gentiles into relationship, but it did make the Jews feel less special. Instead of being thankful and honored that God walked primarily with them for hundreds of years, and brought his Messiah, Jesus, out of their people to save the world; many of them are angry at the mere idea that others should be granted access to their exclusive God. They were making it about themselves and embracing exclusivity.
So what about us today? Well most of us reading this are Gentiles. We should be filled with gratitude that God extends his saving grace through Jesus to us, and we should be thrilled that we are called to invite others, of all backgrounds and walks, into similar relationship. Let’s be careful to not let our human bent toward exclusivity get the better of us. When we encounter someone who doesn’t know God, even if there is something about them that we would deem unworthy or difficult to deal with, let’s remember that Jesus died once for ALL. Let’s be like Paul and invite everyone to join our inclusive club. - Mike Nank

Use the PRAY acronym to guide your prayer this morning.
P = Pause. As you start your time of prayer, begin by pausing and being still before the Lord.
R = Read. Read the Scripture Focus slowly and focus on words/phrases the Holy Spirit highlights as you read.
A = Ask. Ask God to come and speak to you. Open up your heart to Him as your heavenly Father.
Y = Yield. We want to yield our lives to the words we have prayed and commit to follow Jesus’s way.

S = Say. What is the main point? What does it teach about God (Jesus) & yourself?
O = Obey. What can you apply (practice) from this passage today?
S = Share. Who can you share what you’re learning with today?
A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
A while back, I was up north with my family. We were going on an adventure together that day, and there was construction on the road that would have gotten us there. So, we put our destination into GPS and followed it down the dirty, winding, bumpy backroads of northern Michigan until finally, we arrived.
Sometimes, doing the right thing isn’t easy. In Acts 21, we see Paul determined to go to Jerusalem, even though he knows trouble is waiting. People try to talk him out of it, but he’s firm—he knows this is what God has called him to do. It's a powerful reminder that God’s plan isn’t always the easy or peaceful one, and that following it isn’t always smooth. Just ask Jesus. Before going to the cross himself, Jesus gave us a heads up in Matthew 5:11-12, telling us that when we’re persecuted for doing right, we’re actually blessed. That’s tough to hear, but it’s true. Doing the right thing doesn’t always feel alright. And it certainly isn’t always (or even usually) met with cheers of approval from the rest of the world. Take a look at Jesus again, as he stood before Pilate in John 19. The crowd is shouting for His crucifixion, but Jesus remains calm, fully surrendered to God’s plan. He knew that His suffering would lead to something far greater—our salvation.
So, when you’re feeling like the world is against you for doing the right thing, remember you’re in good company. Jesus, Paul, and Christians throughout the ages have walked this way before. Is there something God has asked you to do that you know is right but has gotten hard today? Stay strong and keep your eyes fixed (or focused) on Jesus - God’s got something amazing in store for you.- Dave Kubiak

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
I'm sure at this point we've all heard the famous song by Frank Sinatra called, "I Did Things My Way." What's interesting is, when I look at the way the world is now, I feel many people live their life like this - they're just doing things their own way. That's what they boast in. That's what they're proud of. But not so with Paul. In Acts chapter 20, I want to highlight the latter half of the chapter where Paul gives a farewell sermon to the Ephesian elders/ leaders as he prepares to travel to Jerusalem for Pentecost. Paul earnestly shares how he has not withheld any good thing from the leaders and how he has shared the full gospel and has labored In tears and in hardship for the benefit of the Ephesian church. It is after he pleads his case of sacrifice for them and sincerity of his love that he charges them to do likewise..
In verse 28 He gives a warning to every leader/ (Pastor Overseer Elder) to take care of themselves, but to most importantly take care of God's people/the church - for they were purchased with the blood of Christ. That, in a similar way to how he has given himself up for ministry sacrificially and wholeheartedly, that they as leaders should follow his example and as shepherds protect their ( sheep/church members) from (wolves-false teachers) that will try to enter into the congregation. Also, to never water down the message of grace or allow anyone to come into the body of believers to create division or condemnation or teach false doctrine. He also charged them to take care of those who are weak among them. Paul made it clear that he considered his life worth nothing but to finish his task, a ministry for the sake of Jesus Christ (v28).
Even more, we see this call for living sacrificially in a more structural way in Corinthians 16 where aid and donations and resources were brought together for the benefit and the help of those Christians in Jerusalem. Paul sums up the meaning of his life in an amazing statement in Philippians 1:20 - that Christ would be exalted in his body in his life, whether he lives or whether he dies. I'm so thankful for leaders like Paul, who could have did things his way but decided to do it God's way instead. As children of God, we are all blessed because of it. - Jewaun Glenn

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
There was so much to absorb in these passages, it took a bit of time to settle on what stood out for me. Did you have that same feeling? Did you give Holy Spirit time to whisper the nugget for you this morning? I hope so. If not, stop a moment to hear.
Glad you’re back!
Have you witnessed a really excited, loud conversation? It draws you in. “What are they talking about? What is so exciting?!” You almost can’t help yourself. You just gotta know and before you know, you get caught up in the loud exchange of opinions and personal offenses. This is what happened in our reading today in Ephesus. The thoughts of one silversmith worried about his income with this message of Jesus coming to town spread into a riotous group ready to bring harm to the men sharing the message.
Ephesians 6:12 tells us that we don’t fight against flesh and blood but against spiritual powers and principalities. That crowd seemed to be started by men but in reality the idol makers and craftsmen had been incited by the demons in the city who didn’t want the message of Jesus to interfere with their agenda. What is the agenda of Satan and his demons? His agenda is to elevate himself above God and keep God’s creation from him.
Friends, there is much happening in our cities, country, and world right now. These are important things we need to be aware of and prayerfully consider. But beware of the crowds and wild conversations that incite confusion, anger, and even violence. Satan wants to distract each of us from the message of Jesus and prevent that message of hope, peace, and salvation from spreading.
Ahh…but there was another message we read about too that I couldn’t let go of, and it was the people Paul had met that hadn’t received Holy Spirit. They had been baptized by John waiting for the Messiah but hadn’t taken the next step of receiving the Messiah’s salvation. They too got caught up in the crowd of Jesus’s followers. They watched the wonders of His works and the power of His messages but didn’t receive it for themselves. Sometimes our hearts are being prepared for accepting Jesus’s salvation but then we get caught up in church and the amazing church fellowship and activities and miss the invitation of salvation. Some experience excitement and fun but leave confused about the source of the joy and love.
Friends, don’t get caught up in the excitement of the crowd without knowing the message. Don’t let Satan distract you from the message of Jesus’s salvation, love, and forgiveness. - Renee Richter
