THINK. A Thought from Pastor Dave…
Growing up, Palm Sunday was nothing more than a weird church service where children dressed up and waved around tree branches. It was a chance to try origami with my palm and then turn it into Indiana Jones’s whip for my sister as soon as we left the church building. Once I got a bit older, I saw Palm Sunday as a spontaneous parade put on by the masses when Jesus arrived. We have styrofoam thumbs, noise makers, and confetti cannons, they apparently had palms. But this was no spontaneous party. This parade was well coordinated by Jesus himself. Jesus sent his students to a well-known village. He knew where they would find exactly what they needed for the parade. He was well acquainted with this neighborhood the way you and I are well acquainted with our street. “Palm Sunday” would be Jesus’ way of forcing the issue. What issue, you ask? Throughout his ministry, Jesus shied away from titles. When people asked who he was, he would often respond with a question. When they tried to crown him king prematurely, he would sneak away into the crowd. He longed for individuals to come to their own conclusions about who he was, in their own time. And yet there are times called kairos—critical—moments, a time where hearts are oriented, need is high, and the cosmos has cultivated souls that have been stirred with hunger for something more. For Jesus, this was it. This would be the moment where he revealed who he was to the world. At a certain place. During a certain time. Jesus gives us a certain choice. Could this same prophetic parade find its way into your heart this Holy Week? Is this your place? Could this be your time? Do you need to make the choice Jesus longs for us to make?
LIVE. One practical way to understand and apply the Bible is the SOS method. Ask…
S: What does this passage say about God, and what does it say about me?
O: What am I being invited to obey?
S: What can I share with those around me?
PRAY. Pray for yourself, a family member, a friend, someone who doesn’t know Jesus, and the nations.
