Good Morning!
Let’s focus our day by spending some time with Jesus before it begins.
If you’re new to the Daily Focus, read this first.
GET FOCUSED | Worship can be as simple as thanking God for who He is & what He does. (Psalm 100:4)
Spend a few moments in silence, meditating on scripture, or writing/saying 3-5 things you’re thankful for.
Play or sing some worship music you love, or use a playlist from Paradox on Spotify.
MORNING PRAYER FOCUS | Prayer is a conversation that involves both talking and listening to God.
Simply pray the prayer Jesus taught his followers: the Lord’s Prayer, or pray it using this Lord’s Prayer guide.
SCRIPTURE FOCUS | Today’s reading is from John 16 & Romans 8:12-17
Pray a simple prayer before reading, asking the Holy Spirit to guide you into all truth. (John 14:26)
Highlight verses that capture your attention, and ask three simple questions as you read…
S = Say. What is the main point? What does it teach about God (Jesus) & yourself?
O = Obey. What can you apply (practice) from this passage today?
S = Share. Who can you share what you’re learning with today?
A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
The other night I was driving home from Ann Arbor and I got stuck for over one hour in traffic as there was an accident in the construction zone on 696. This would not have happened to my wife, April. Even when she knows where she is going and how to get there, she activates her GPS app just in case there is some construction or an accident that would make another route more advantageous. I nearly always choose to wing it, and some times I pay dearly for that choice.
For years, Jesus’ disciples followed him…literally. Day by day they would go where he went and did exactly as he, their teacher, instructed. It was as if he was their chauffeur on the road of life. In today’s reading, Jesus tells them that he will soon be leaving them, but not to worry. For when he goes, another will come. Not another chauffeur, but something better…a GPS, or sorts, in the person of the Holy Spirit. Now instead of 12 guys following God in a singular direction, they can split up and go in several, still being navigated by God himself.
And unlike the Global Positioning Systems that we use, where we input a desired destination, the Holy Spirit is able and very willing to “guide us into all truth”, showing us which destinations and paths to get there are most ultimately advantageous for us. If we want to follow Jesus, we HAVE TO use God’s Positioning Spirit, allowing him to set the course and navigate us turn by turn. When we do, God leads us closer to himself. For as Paul said in Romans: “all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God…heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.”
Don’t wing it and spend your time idle, or headed for a dead end. Pray, and ask Jesus to send you his GPS today!
