THINK. A Thought from Pastor Dave
Like father, like son. Manasseh did Judah a solid and reproduced… (sorry for the sarcasm.) 2 Kings 21:20 says that Amon did what was evil in the Lord’s sight just as his father Manasseh had done. (see Friday’s Focus.) Verse 21 continues - Amon did what his father did, walked as his father walked, and served the idols his father served. Amon did what his father did. Amon did things the way his father did them. And Amon did those things for who/what his father did them. When it comes to influence, there’s no place we have more than in the next generation. “Do as I say, not as I do” is a lie. You’re being watched and copied, whether you know/like it or not. So… how’s your walk? What do you do? What are the practices, rhythms, and disciplines where you’ve found life, goodness, and joy? Who are you passing them on to? How do you do those things? It’s one thing to know it’s good to do something - it’s another to know how to do it. Who are you discipling? When? How? And finally, who/what are you doing it for? Yourself? Money? Fame? The people closest to you have a way of ending up with similar values, goals, and desires. And the longer those things drive you, the more habitual and engrained they become. That’s why it’s better to get rid of the bad stuff early. Put it to death. It won’t just be your life that changes - but the next generation too. So, how’s your walk? What needs to be “put to death early” in you? Ask God to show you and help you. Then, ask who He’s put in your life that you can walk with.
