Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness, who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.
— Isaiah 5:20

It seems like most of the bad decisions that we make happen at night - in the dark. Darkness has a way of hiding the truth, and people go to great lengths to keep things in the dark. Whether it’s for fear of the consequences or shame for what we’ve done, it’s natural to want to hide when we’ve made the wrong choice. There are always consequences for our choices, and trying to keep our sin hidden in the dark only makes things worse. Take an honest inventory today - are there any areas of your life where you’re choosing darkness over light? Is there any thing you’ve been hiding in the dark?

Confess it. That means agree with God about what is evil and what is good - what is darkness and what is light. When you bring what is hidden into the light, there may still be natural consequences for the choices we’ve made in the past. But they don’t have to define our future. God promises in Genesis 3:15 that one day, He will send someone to take the consequences of our sin and darkness (death and separation from God) in exchange for His light and life, forever. Who is this one that would come? Jesus.

One practical method you can use to help you go deeper when reading the Bible is the SOS method.

  • S: What does this passage say about God, and what does it say about me?

  • O: What am I being invited to obey?

  • S: What can I share with those around me?
