A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
We’ve been reading about Jesus being the Bread of Life for a couple of days now as He pulled from Israel’s history and story with God - His provision of manna in the wilderness when they were - you guessed it - grumbling and complaining because they had no food to eat. He prophesies to them the words from Isaiah, reminding them of the promise spoken over their future. And here they are, living in that prophecy that was foretold so long ago, being taught by God through His Son Jesus who has seen Him. I remember reading this Scripture in the past when my walk with Jesus was newer and I was learning so much but also felt like I knew nothing at all. That feeling hasn’t left. As I read this Scripture, though, I was encouraged and had hope that God would teach me and instruct me as I looked to Jesus. Pastor Dave spoke on this very thing in Sunday’s sermon, as Hebrews says that in the former days God spoke to us through prophets but now He has spoken to us through His Son, Jesus. What a gift. This daily bread that we have been provided with is living and we have the ability to be with, talk with, interact with, sit with, and commune with Jesus and be fully satisfied - as nothing in this world will ever do. Your times in His Word and in prayer talking with Jesus and seeking His face are not in vain! To know Him, be taught by Him - that is your promise today and everyday. - Jessica Glenn

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
I like hard work. I enjoy getting dirty and tired and being able to put everything into a project. I feel like the harder the work, the more satisfying it is when you are done and you get to step back and admire your labors. So for someone like me, I can really feel for the crowds Jesus spoke to in today’s reading who were a little confused by Jesus’ answer to their question: “What must we do to be doing the works of God?”
His answer: “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
I read this and I’m like “And then what? There has to be more. Like what do I need to actually DO?” But there isn’t. Jesus says that he is the bread of life and that all who believe in him will be satisfied , never hunger/thirst again, and be sealed for eternal life. “All for just
believing? Really???” Yes.
This world gives us nothing for free, so it is hard for us to understand this concept. But the truth is that God loves us. We were created to love him and be loved by him, and he wants that relationship forever. And all we need to do is want the same thing. Believe the message of grace that Jesus brought, the promise he sealed with sacrifice. He did all the hard work. When we believe and accept his grace, he can step back and admire the fruit of his labors: us.
Thank you, Jesus!!!

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
What are you afraid of? In a season/culture where “fear” is all around us, this morning’s Focus reminded me of Jesus’ perfect love that casts it out like the dawn removes darkness. (1 John 4:18) In John 6:16-24, we find the disciples caught in a storm, struggling to row across the sea as darkness falls. Jesus isn’t with them at first, but suddenly, they see Him walking on the water, coming toward them. In their fear, He says, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” This passage reminds us that even in life’s darkest, most uncertain moments—when we’re afraid and we feel like we’re rowing against the wind—Jesus is still present. He may not always appear in ways we expect, but He shows up right when we need Him, bringing peace in the middle of chaos… and removing our fear.

The storms we face today might not be literal, but they can feel just as overwhelming. Whether it’s fear, anxiety, or challenges beyond our control, we’re not left to face them alone. Jesus is there, inviting us to trust Him and not be afraid. Just as He calmed the storm for the disciples, He can bring calm to whatever we’re facing, reminding us that His presence is our peace. So, what are you afraid of? Visualize your storm this morning. And then, allow Jesus to come to you in the middle of it, whispering those same words - “It is I; don’t be afraid.” - Dave Kubiak

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…. Today’s reading in 1 John really spoke to me. Essentially, these words say that we are recipients & participants, not producers when it comes to our relationship with Jesus. I remember reading a book on prayer several years ago by author Phillip Yancey. In it, he made a point that still sticks with me today -  that we are not the initiators of prayer, we are simply joining in with God for His work and purposes in our life and world. This is encouraging, there is no pressure to “start the party” - we are attendees!

Another thing, Verse 3 really stuck out to me as well, which says “All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.” ‭‭(1 John‬ ‭3:3‬ ‭NIV) My prayer today for myself, my family, and anyone reading this is that we would seek to be pure because HE is pure! -

A THOUGHT FROM TODAYS READING…

I love how 2 Timothy 4:8 states, “Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing.” Everyone appreciates the idea of rewards. Whether it’s graduating college and receiving a degree, finishing a race and getting a medal, or enjoying dessert after dinner, we often celebrate the completion of our efforts. Yet, it takes a great deal of perseverance to see these things through to the end. Years ago, I decided to train for a half marathon with my husband. There were many challenging moments during the training, like waking up early to run before starting my day. Countless times, I was tempted to relax on the couch instead of completing my run. However, when race day arrived and I crossed the finish line, the sense of accomplishment was one of the best feelings I’ve ever experienced. I proudly wore the medal for days! This race, however exciting as it was to accomplish, is nothing compared to the joy that will come from a life lived in obedience to God. God has called us to a challenging task: to share the gospel with those around us. In verse 5, Paul reminds us to “keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist.” This message indicates that the work He asks us to do won’t always be easy. There may be times when you feel isolated in your mission, or when relationships strain because of differing beliefs. You might wonder if it’s worth it to keep going. I assure you, if you persevere, the reward waiting for you in heaven will far exceed any fleeting satisfaction you find here on earth. “Endure the hardship, do the work of an evangelist,” and patiently anticipate the reward God promises—it will absolutely be worth it! - Liz Holland

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
Today I felt like Jesus fit these three passages together in such a beautiful and unique way for me. I love how it starts with God, through Isaiah, telling us how the Word of God is what lasts. It’s so easy for me to think that other things that I see and experience in my life will last forever - but I take joy in knowing that what outlasts it all is God’s Word. In John, Jesus is praying and asking that we (those who follow Him) would be one, just as He is one with the Father. Love - the kind of love God loves us with, that His grace enables us to receive and love others with, is what lasts. His words of love are what will last. In James, we see an example of that love in action, as the passage starts by inviting the reader to be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger because all of these things bring God’s blessing! When we hear God’s Word, live in unity with other believers, and love others by being quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger… persevering in these things - we will be blessed in what we do. It’s a promise! We are to, as James says in verse 21, “humbly accept the word.” Today, I feel like the Lord is inviting us to ask Him “is there any situation in my life where I have not really heard you or others, or where I’ve been quick to speak, or quick to respond in anger?” As He lovingly reveals something to you (He will!), receive it humbly! Reach out to someone who loves Jesus and you and share it with them. Ask them to pray for you, that you would act on His words of love and not just hear them. - Gwyn Kubiak

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
If someone tells us a truth we don’t want to hear about ourselves, or shares about something horrible happening in the world, or reminds us to follow a rule/law that we think is silly…what do we do? We often find ways to discredit what they are saying. “They are exaggerating.” “They don’t know what they are talking about.” “That is just their view/opinion.” “That rule does not apply to this circumstance.” Etc. Why do we do this? Because we are human! We have a sin nature that we were born with that leads us to favor truths and rules that align with how WE want things to be, usually to maximize our physical/worldly desires. Paul warned Timothy about this in today’s reading: “'For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear.” I think Paul nailed it. We have seen throughout human history teachers ignore parts of Scripture and/or twist it to meet an agenda that they have. Scary. It feels to me like when the serpent (Satan) was talking to Eve in the garden and said: “Did God really say ‘you can’t eat from any tree in the garden?’.” When we ask ourselves “is this REALLY the truth?” when it is clearly spelled out, we pay a dangerous game.
So how do we confront this tendency?
We read the Bible. Like actually, really read it. We come to know for ourselves what it says. Moreover, we ask God to reveal to us directly through his Holy Spirit what his Word is saying. Paul said: “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” We can be completely equipped to live a life righteous before God when we know what Scripture says. If you are reading this, you have taken a great step toward knowing the Bible by engaging with the daily Focus. Maybe God is calling you deeper, and you want to augment this with additional study? The YouVersion app has TONS of Bible reading plans that can guide you through increased reading at various paces. Maybe you commit to reading one chapter a day. Maybe you listen to the Bible in your car instead of the radio during your commute. Maybe you join a Lifegroup here at Paradox that is going deeper into scripture study. Whatever it looks like, I encourage you to take a step toward learning God’s Word. -

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
Today’s reading is from some of the most powerful and personally meaningful verses in all of Scripture. On Friday, we talked about this promise that in our life and in this world we WILL face difficulty and suffering. (For more on that, just read Romans 8:18-30, which give today’s reading more context.) Every time I read these verses, I’m reminded of both my grandpa and my father-in-law, who clung to THIS promise even in the midst of the most painful one: sickness, suffering, and death. Here’s that powerful promise again: there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that can ever separate you from God’s love. Not what you did. Not what was done to you. Not your current circumstance or consequence. Not even sin and the forces of evil themselves. It’s been said that love can give power to do impossible things - from a parent who finds physical power s/he doesn’t possess to lift a car and save her/his child to the mental strength to keep going for the sake of another, to the emotional power of knowing that someone loves and believes in you that helps you take the next step. Huey Lewis had it right, that’s the power of love. So today, know this. I mean really, KNOW it. You. Are. Loved. Just as you are, not as you should be. There is NOTHING you have done, will do, or could do to change that. Stop and think about that… feel it. God could not possibly love you and more or less than He does right now, at this very moment. Receive your Father’s love for you in Jesus today. Return to it throughout your day, and let it carry you through. Jesus conquered so you could conquer. Jesus overcame so you could overcome. - Dave Kubiak

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
One of my favorite movie series of all time is Rocky. In Rocky III, “Clubber” Lang is asked to make a prediction about his upcoming fight with Rocky Balboa. He responds with an intense gaze directly into the camera and a single word: “Pain.” Today’s reading contains some promises I wish weren’t there. Namely, that in “the last days” (and none of us know when those are/will be), there will come times of difficulty. It’s more than a “prediction,” it’s a promise. In our sinful, broken world people will become increasingly selfish and arrogant, and our world will get messier. That’s a promise. The real question is what we’ll do with that promise. How will we receive it and respond? Remember, Paul wrote these words to Timothy, who never lived to see the “last days” Paul is describing… or did he? These days since Jesus rose and promised to return can collectively be referred to as “the last days.” And in them, though Jesus has defeated sin, death, and the devil, we live in an “already won but not yet fully realized” world. It’s like the game being “won” and “over” with time still left on the clock. So what do we do in these “last days?” How should we respond? Not by trying to figure out whether or not we’re in them (in this sense, we are!), begging God to remove them (although it’s ok to ask Jesus to come quickly!), by living in fear/self-defense/withdrawal because of them, or judging the world for them (remember, Jesus is coming back to do that). Quite the opposite. Paul instructs Timothy (and all of us fellow “last days-livers”) to faithfully follow Jesus and live a godly life in the midst of these sufferings and persecutions. Keep on keeping on, in other words - with Scripture as your guide. It’s from God, for you, today, in the midst of whatever hardship, suffering, or persecution you’re facing. God promised it was coming, and has prepared us with His Spirit and His Word. Allow Him help you continue on through it today by opening up your Bible and your life to the Holy Spirit, asking if there is any reproof, correction, training, or equipping God has to help you get through it today. -

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
I believe God cares so deeply for our character, and is truly after our heart. He demonstrated through His son Jesus the way we should live, and continues to refine us with His Holy Spirit. In Psalm 119: 9-16, I find direction. Use God’s Word, and keep His commandments. This is how to guard our hearts, and continue walking in His righteous ways. God’s Word shows us how to weigh and measure everything our minds take in, and how our hearts process these things. (v15). I used to think the excuse “I just don’t want to” was as good as any, and gave me permission to not be obedient. I actually lived with that attitude. Who’s going to make me?! I felt empowered by it. It wasn’t until I was put in a position of leadership that I began to battle against this nature in my flesh, like when I became a wife and mother. “I don’t feel like it” doesn’t really work well when I’m talking to my child, and “you can’t make me” sounds pretty immature when I’m working something out with my husband. I think this rings true in all forms of leadership. We aren’t called to be perfect. God’s Words bleed love, grace and forgiveness throughout. God disciplines those He loves with these things, and He never stops loving His children. He wants us to stay close to Him so we always know where we are, and have our Heavenly Father to go to in any situation. We can lead effectively because we are following our good shepherd. Ask God how you can walk closer to Him today. Start by going to His Word, and thank Him for the instruction He gives. Praise Him for giving you the tools to measure all things with, and In particular our own hearts. Be thankful for His Holy Spirit that walks with us as we learn to use what we have been given for His good works. My prayer is that you see the fruit of the Holy Spirit in your life today, and that it would bring you joy like it brings your Heavenly Father. - Rachel Hood

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
Do you find yourself getting overwhelmed with all the chatter these days? We get it from social media apps, the news, standing in line for something, going to a sporting event, and hearing the people around us. It goes on and on. Everyone has an opinion or complaint about something and doesn’t care who hears. There seems to be constant chatter and noise. Are you part of the noise? In this passage, Paul reminds us that we are all workers for the Lord, and we have an opportunity to represent ourselves and Him well. Sharing thoughts and asking questions is good and sometimes necessary. I, for one, process things out loud. There are so many thoughts bouncing around in my head that I just need to get them out so I can hear myself speak and filter out the main thought. However, I have to be careful not to overwhelm my listener with too many thoughts or thoughts that could cause that person confusion or harm. We are in a time of many opinions, questions, problems, and concerns. We are being overloaded with information we have to process or ignore. It’s good to ask questions and process information with trusted friends who know and love Jesus. These conversations can lead to wisdom, peace, and understanding. BUT friends, listen to Paul’s warning in this passage: handle the truth rightly, avoid irreverent babble, don’t allow your talk to spread like a killing infection leading to death, and don’t upset the faith of those participating in the conversation or those close enough to hear only. In this season (or any season, really), we have an opportunity to lead others to the truth, the truth of Jesus, and correct thinking with kindness, gentleness, and love. Take part in some of these conversations. I believe some of these are needed, but be very careful not to get caught up in arguing that leads to the destruction of a relationship or the tearing down of someone’s heart and faith. At the end of the passage, Paul tells us that our patience and gentleness can lead someone to repentance and knowledge of the truth found in Jesus. Our goal isn’t to leave the conversation as the victor in our opinion (even if it’s correct). Our goal is to lead the person to truth with love, gentleness, and kindness so there is no cause to turn away from Jesus. We represent Jesus in every conversation and action; do it with honor for the Father. Friends, as I write these words, Holy Spirit speaks as much to me and those reading them. Go in peace and be encouraged. We can do all things through Christ, who gives us strength. Philippians 4:13. - Renee Richter

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
Too many of us live like zombies. According to TV and movie lore… zombies are people who died, but continue to walk the earth with one purpose: to feed their flesh. In today’s reading from Romans, Paul reminds followers of Jesus that when we accepted him as Lord, “'we were buried with him by baptism into death.” All people will die, but those who are “buried with Jesus” have their sins covered by him. Jesus’ sacrifice absolves our sins. For those choosing not to die with Jesus, they are buried alone, and they will be accountable for their sins before God.
Paul goes on to say: “just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in newness of life.” Should we interpret this to mean that just as Jesus ascended to heaven after his death, we will share the same fate by God’s glory? Yes! But, I think there is another level to what Paul is saying…
In this life, before we physically die, we should be dead to sin, and seek to live a righteous life before God. Or as Peter says: “live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for God’s will.” Could we continue to live in sin, and would those sins be covered by the blood of Jesus if we share in his death? Yes, but why would we do such things? If we have aligned ourselves with Jesus, we have God’s Holy Spirit to show us what righteousness looks like in all situations, and to give us the strength to resist sin, flee the Devil, and do the things that lead to life.
Paul says: “those who are alive from the dead, offer yourselves to God, and all the parts of yourselves to God as weapons for righteousness.” So what will you choose? You are alive from the dead because of Jesus, so will you continue to live a life focused on pleasing you, aka be a zombie? Or…inspired by Jesus sacrifice and thankful for God’s grace, will you forego you own temporary, earthy desires to live a life of service to Him? Let’s call it, being a zomgie (copywrite pending). The “g” can stand for grace, good, or simply God, but zomgies know they are dead to sin, alive in Christ Jesus, and they desire to do His will so long as they continue to draw breath.
Join the army of the son-dead (copyright also pending), and be zomgie today!!!

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
If you’re not watching the Detroit Tigers right now, it’s the time to start! They’re suddenly the hottest team in baseball and making a serious push for the playoffs, and, suddenly, September baseball in Detroit matters. Being a Tigers fan is a lot of fun right now, and this young team has a lot to be proud of. However, fun and a promising season isn’t enough - now is the time press in, push hard, and finish strong. In 2 Timothy 2:1-13, Paul encourages Timothy to stay strong in grace, endure hardship like a good soldier, and keep his focus on the mission - just like an athlete or farmer who works hard for the reward. It’s a reminder that following Jesus isn't always easy—there will be tough times, distractions, and challenges. But Paul points to Christ’s faithfulness, saying even if we struggle or fall, God remains faithful to us. It’s like Paul is saying, “Don’t give up! God’s got you, and His grace will carry you through.” So, when life feels tough or overwhelming, remember we’re not alone in this, and our endurance matters more than we know! Keep going and stay focused on Jesus today. The best is yet to come! - Dave Kubiak

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
God wants a relationship with us. We should go to him for everything, and that includes our confidence. I am confident in Jesus because he says I am adequate in him. Often, in my daily life, I feel I am under qualified and lacking confidence under my own power, but I know that I can do what he asks of me because he lives in me.
Have you ever felt God tell you to share something with someone and then thought to yourself, “They are going to think I’m crazy!" But when you say it, they confirm that it was in their heart and needed to be heard. A few weeks back, I was sitting near a woman in church. I had seen her a few times but never spoken to her. I felt the Holy Spirit say, "Her presence matters. Tell her I want her here." It took me a moment, and he said it twice. I gently leaned over and repeated what he said: "Your presence matters, and God wants you here." She replied with tears and a hug and said she was going to tip toe out before the end of service because she felt small and unseen. But God wanted her to know his heart for her. That, my friend, is a prime example of "God qualification.” When we trust in him, we can step out in his confidence. Our adequacy is from God. With him, we gain hope, confidence, and wisdom. Be obedient in Christ and his adequacy, even in the midst of pain, hardship, uncertainty, and suffering. When I lost my Dad several years ago, I found it hard to rejoice. Now, through Christ knowing God's promises, I have found peace and rejoice now in knowing God is our source. With God, we can have true joy. We can go to God with confidence through Christ and trust what he says is true. I encourage you today to take up confidence and rejoice, with prayers and thanksgiving to God, our Father, who has set us apart and called us to share his love and truths to build each other up. May God's love and blessings surround you today and always

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
If you knew your time was coming to an end, what would your last words be? Paul is arguably one of the greatest writers of the New Testament. He called himself a Hebrew of Hebrews: overly educated, under appreciated, full of wisdom and years of experience, miracles and near-death misses. He was courageous and unwavering. And yet, when we see him in 2 Timothy, he is a man that Is fully aware of his need for encouragement, his need for human contact, and his own mortality. Second, Timothy is Paul's final letter before he is (killed/beheaded) for his faith - and he knows his time has come. There are so many things he could write about. His regrets, his secrets, or even his doubts. But he chooses his last moments on earth to write a letter of encouragement for his fellow brother/friend in Christ. To remind him to never be ashamed of the gospel. To hold to the faith that was passed down to him through his grandmother and even his mother - so that he wouldn't let go of what was instilled in him. Paul teaches that “the spirit of fear” does not come from God, and reminds Timothy of his purpose to preach the truth and serve as an ambassador for God.  Paul really viewed his life as a race, and in his final farewell he is passing the baton to Timothy to continue the calling of grace through faith. Paul writes to Timothy not just as a fellow missionary, but as a father would write to his own son. He used his last moments not for self-gratification, but to encourage others for the sake of the church, the future, and the kingdom of God. His final moments were written in love and sacrifice - which is really how you can sum up the latter half of his life. Paul told timothy to not be ashamed of him, because his sacrifice has put him in prison - the very place from which he is currently writing - but to be bold and unashamed of the gospel. Which brings me to this final thought: I don't know what your last words will be. But I can give you an idea of what mine would look like, and it will be something like this, "My brothers and sisters in Christ, the meaning of life is to be known by God who is Christ and to make him known to whomever he gives you the honor to do so. Do this with all of your strength and all of your might and, in this, you will obtain the meaning of life and the joy of eternity.” - Jewaun Glenn

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
This verse, written by David in Psalm 25:12-15, refers to fearing the Lord. This idea of fearing God is also stated in Proverbs 9:10, which says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” So you may be wondering, if God is so loving and caring, why should we fear Him? Well, let me elaborate on this - when I was very young I thought this exact thing, but never voiced my confusion. Now that I am “older and wiser” (I know, I am laughing at me being “wiser” too), I have developed a deeper understanding of this concept. When we were children, our parents were the ones in charge. They taught us what was right and wrong, and what they expected of us. We knew very quickly that if we did not obey their rules that there were consequences. As we grew and learned to “know better,” those consequences may have become more severe. We developed a healthy “fear” of breaking those rules, and of our parents. Hopefully, we still knew our parents truly loved us, and only wanted what was best for us.
Those who have become parents themselves, then, know that as parents we only want our children to grow up to be respectful, responsible, kind, and loving adults. We need to remember that we ARE God’s children, He created us lovingly and longs for us to one day reside with Him in heaven. “Fearing” God ultimately means following His leadership in our lives - which boils down to basically what Jesus told us to do, Love one another, as He loved us. Think about this, Jesus did not lie, steal, cheat, spread false rumors, covet anyones possessions, or spouse, He only honored the Father and put no one above His Father. Understanding this is the beginning of wisdom - a life lived under God’s leadership. He has promised to care for us and to prosper us as we follow His commandments. Just like we are always ready to assist our children who are living an upright life. 2 Peter 1: 5-7 tells us, “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and goodness , knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.” So remember my dear friends, that as His children we are to love one another, continue to follow His commandments, and  remind each other of our divine mission. I pray that you will fear the Lord and increase in wisdom. Amen. -

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
Paul closes out his first letter to Timothy with a couple admonishments, one teaching point, and a healthy dose of encouragement.
He tells Timothy to flee from the pursuit of wealth. Paul has seen it cause many to wander from their faith as their focus shifts from trust and hope in God to trust and hope in wealth. I think we could all say we have seen those pursuing wealth struggle to find contentment in God alone. Paul does not want that for young Timothy, especially since he has a call on his life to teach and lead. To that end, Paul instructs Timothy to remind those with means that their riches should flow into many good works as they lean on God who richly provides all we need. I don’t know about you, but I don’t feel rich. There is a tendency to read passages like this in the Bible and think “this isn’t for me”. But wealth is relative, and most of us are better off than many around us, and can afford to help. We should do this because we know God will backfill what we need, AND, as Jesus said and Paul repeats, when we share our treasures on earth with others we store up for ourselves treasure in heaven.
Along with avoiding riches, Paul admonishes Timothy to avoid “irreverent babble” (ESV) and “what is falsely called knowledge”. I believe Paul was referring to philosophical/theological arguments. The Jewish people were occupied and ruled by a Greco-Roman culture that was very preoccupied at the time with big questions of “why"?”, “what is truth?”, etc. I think Paul was reminding Timothy, and us, that it is not our job to argue for the existence or relevance of God. We need only share our experience with him and make the introduction. God will do the heavy lifting of breaking through intellectual barriers to grab people’s hearts.
As we close this letter to Timothy, let us be encouraged to “fight the good fight for the faith”. Let us “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness”, which we know are not things we can get from the world, but are fruit that comes out of us from God when we walk by his Spirit. - Mike Nank

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
George Harrison said it well in the 80’s, when he sang, “I’ve got my mind set on you.” He echoed Jesus, who said that our heart follows our treasure. If we’re going to be everyday leaders in God’s kingdom, it’s worth considering, then, where our heart, treasure, and focus really lies. What are we “seeking?” Ecclesiastes 5:10 says, "Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income," while Luke 12:13-34 reminds us that life is more than just stuff. In today’s reading, Jesus hits the idea that being pre-occupied (first occupation) or loving and seeking material things won’t add a day to your life, and that when we respond to God’s invitation to be seek God’s kingdom first—we actually discover that everything else falls into place. In America today, that message hits close to home. Despite being among the wealthiest people in history, surveys show that about 48% of Americans feel like they have "enough" money to meet their needs, and only 10% think of themselves as rich. (Interestingly, many believe it takes a net worth of about $2.5 million to be considered wealthy) (Charles Schwab)(Money). In a world obsessed with having more, these verses give us a needed reality check. Chasing after money and possessions can feel like an endless race… and it never fully satisfies. But Jesus invites us to trust God with our needs and focus on things that last. God’s got us, so we don’t need to be weighed down by stuff that won’t. Let's keep our hearts focused on Him today, trusting that the rest will follow. - Dave Kubiak

A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
There were three things that spoke to me in today's reading. The first is from verse 3 where Paul is warning about those who are teaching something different from the words given us by Jesus. This is important in our world today as society seems to be drawn to the new rather than the truth. We are more apt to listen to a new thought or idea than sit and listen to the same gospel we’ve heard all our lives. The truth is written down for us; we don't need to go searching for it or create our own truth. The next thing comes from verse 6 where Paul tells Timothy that “godliness with contentment is great gain”. Paul is calling us to understand the difference between what we want and what we need. Needs are those things that allow us to live and participate in his kingdom. Wants are those things we convince ourselves are needs eventually turning them into idols. Our true contentment is only found In God, not in our worldly possessions. The idols that we create and the money we seek only provide temporary contentment. God will be with us forever and never abandon us. The third thing is the desire to be rich. Our society today celebrates flashy lifestyles. We all love a good rags to riches story. Unfortunately the flashy lifestyle tends to lead to sacrificing our faith to increase our gain. The pursuit of gain leads many away from the faith looking for accolades for their financial and material gains. Jesus died on the cross to pay a debt he didn’t owe for sins he didn’t commit. Those were our sins he died for so that God’s grace could be available to us. It's not a cheap grace, it is going to cost us something. We are going to have to learn to walk in the lessons and words from the Bible. Since our stay here is only temporary why would we not want to live a life that leads to everlasting life with Jesus. A THOUGHT FROM TODAY’S READING…
After a while, pretty much anything can get old. Sure, everyone loves that first snow (unless it comes in October), but shoveling it gets pretty old by the time March rolls around. Whether it’s the dishes your roommate left in the sink, the laundry your spouse left on the floor, the lights that your kids left on (again), or the expired food left in the fridge at work… we get tired of saying and doing the same things over and over again. Life can sometimes feel like that, can’t it? Repetitive. A lot of effort with little visible return. Galatians 6:4-10 reminds us to keep going. It says, "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." It's a promise that what we sow will eventually grow, even when we can’t see it right away. And while the charge to “keep going” can be tiresome, there are certain things that can only come about through repetition, commitment, and (as Eugene Peterson famously put it), “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction.” Part of our discipleship to Jesus is committing to faithfully follow those who have faithfully followed before us. Hebrews 13:7-17 encourages us to look to the leaders who’ve “kept going” ahead of us and to follow their example of faith. Our leaders, our mentors—they’ve faced their own struggles, yet they remained faithful, and their lives are testimonies of God's goodness.
So, what does this mean for us today? It means our small acts of kindness, our faithfulness, and our perseverance matter. Whether you’re serving at church, showing up for your family, or simply staying true to God in your daily grind, you’re sowing seeds. And God promises that these seeds will bear fruit in time. Where do you need to “keep going” today? Who can you look to (or ask) who has gone before to help you keep your eyes focused on Jesus, not lose heart, and trust that your faithfulness isn’t in vain? -
