THINK. A Thought from Pastor Dave…
I love Scripture because it is so clear on so many matters of faith and life. While the Bible gives plenty of concrete things for us to do and not do - there are other places where we wish we had more clarity. It’s in these “grey” areas that each person must, in good faith, go to God for themselves and depend on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Not everyone will come to the same conclusions or share the same convictions. And you know what? the Bible says that’s ok! It’s ok to disagree. Today, we’re called to remember that the way of Jesus is not thinking all the same things as others - the way of Jesus is loving them even when we disagree. To the person convicted about eating food sacrificed to idols, Paul writes that they should not, in fact, eat it because for them it would be wrong. The greater wrong, however, is judging the person who doesn’t share that conviction. We don’t put standards on people that God hasn’t put on them! But Paul also says that, while those who think you can eat food sacrificed to idols are right, you can be right and still get it wrong. The application is not that these people shouldn’t be eating this food because some think it’s wrong - the application is that they shouldn’t be trying to convince others that what they feel is wrong for them would actually be ok. Instead, we should all be trying to help each other follow Jesus in the unique ways He is leading each of us. It’s not about you, it’s about them. And more importantly, it’s about Jesus.
PRAY. Pray for yourself, a family member, a friend, someone who doesn’t know Jesus, and the nations.
LIVE. One practical way to understand and apply the Bible is the SOS method. Ask…
S: What does this passage say about God, and what does it say about me?
O: What am I being invited to obey?
S: What can I share with those around me?
