THINK. A Thought from Pastor Dave…
Do you ever feel like you’re the only one following Jesus? King Jotham feels you. He did what was right, but the people didn’t. The quick takeaway from this quick chapter? He didn’t waver in obeying the Lord HIS God. Everyone has a god. Everyone chooses something to love, pursue, and give their life to. Jotham’s God was the Lord - HIS God. And the Lord OUR God is good, powerful, and just. He blesses and gives abundant life to everything and everyone given to Him. The results of serving other gods are sad, disgusting, and evil. Ahaz didn’t pursue the Lord, and the cost was great. He sacrificed His children. One God gives life. These other “gods” take it. The Lord our God is a God of justice - meaning He does not want anything to do with the disgusting, destructive, horrible, consequences of sin (worshipping anything other than God). Our God is so good, that He continues to work to remove sin from our life (because He knows the destruction it will bring to the people He loves), and eliminate it from the face of the earth, which He created to be good and is restoring. Humans have long tried to “fix” our lives and the world apart from God. When we take justice into our own hands, often we end up guilty of doing wrong and bringing more destruction, continuing the cycle for generations. When we run the opposite way, as Ahaz did, pursuing other kings, wealth, power, and other “gods,” we find not help, but our downfall. The problem isn’t doing more - it’s who you’re doing it for. Turn and run far and fast from every other “god” you’re pursuing today. This is confession and repentance - acknowledging the other “gods” you’ve served or are pursuing and the destruction that’s brought in your life, the lives of others, and the world. When you confess, Scripture tells us that God is faithful and just to forgive because Jesus is our sacrifice! Then, ask God to help you choose Him, do what is right, and not waver.
