From Mars Hill to Hillsong… church scandals sadly seem to be all around us. Because of the damage sin causes, our natural reaction can be to cover it up. But that only makes the problem worse. God places a high standard on leadership because it comes with great responsibility for others. Because we should want to protect our leaders’ heart, soul, family, and church, God calls us to call out, not cover up. Sin is serious, and so is accusation. Neither should be taken lightly. (Neither should the process of appointing leaders be taken lightly.) The damage sin can cause is public, so it can’t remain private. Matthew 18:15-17 lays out a process for lovingly calling out sin. This “calling out” is not the public shaming and cancellation we see on social media. It is personal, relational, and loving. It assumes the best and is done from a place of and with a desire for healing and restoration. But don’t just call out the sin, call out the good! In doing so, we’ll honor our leaders and protect the church.
LIVE. One practical way to understand and apply the Bible is the SOS method. Ask…
S: What does this passage say about God, and what does it say about me?
O: What am I being invited to obey?
S: What can I share with those around me?
PRAY. Pray for yourself, a family member, a lifegroup/church friend, someone who doesn’t know Jesus, and the nations. Pick one each day or pray through them all every day.
