THINK. A Thought from Pastor Dave…
Do you have anyone that you would do absolutely anything for? Think of that person for a moment. One of two things, or both, is likely true about them. Either that person has already done quite a bit for you - been with you through hard times, been there for you, met a physical or emotional need, or put you ahead of themselves in some way. This is usually the case at a wedding, when two people commit to loving and serving each other, and putting the needs, desires, and comfort of another ahead of their own. The second thing that may be true is that you simply love that person so deeply that they are almost an extension of yourself. They haven’t necessarily done anything for you but you would do all of those things for them (ie your child.) Both of these are true in Jesus. Jesus , our “groom,” loves, provides for, and sacrifices Himself for His bride (the Church) when we (in another sense, God our Father’s kids) haven’t done anything at all to deserve any of it. The Church is His “body” - an extension of Himself. Without this reality, “submission” is a dirty, controlling, even abusive word. But taken in light of the self-sacrificing love of Jesus, who not only would do anything for us but has already done everything for us - it is the Church’s response of love.
LIVE. One practical way to understand and apply the Bible is the SOS method. Ask…
S: What does this passage say about God, and what does it say about me?
O: What am I being invited to obey?
S: What can I share with those around me?
PRAY. Pray for yourself, a family member, a lifegroup/church friend, someone who doesn’t know Jesus, and the nations. Pick one each day or pray through them all every day.
