THINK. A Thought from Pastor Mike
Today we are reading about Rahab. We see that she is a prostitute living in the walled city of Jericho, the city standing in the way of the Israelite army who is destined to reach the land God has promised his people. Refresher from Matthew 1: “Salmon fathered Boaz by Rahab, Boaz fathered Obed by Ruth, Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered King David.” So how does a foreign prostitute become the great-great grandmother of Israel’s most revered king (David)? Answer = FEAR. Listen to what she says to the Israelite spies: “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and everyone who lives in the land is panicking because of you.” She and the people of Jericho have heard the miraculous stories of all God has done to deliver his people, and they believe they are next to fall. Rahab’s conclusion: “the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below”. She smartly acknowledges God’s sovereignty and makes arrangements to save her family. She is welcomed into the victorious Israelite people as a reward. Thus her healthy fear of the Lord resulted in relationship with Him, and ultimately a place in the lineage of Jesus. We can learn from her that fighting against the Lord and his plans results in destruction, but accepting his will brings life.
