THINK. Thoughts & Prayers from Pastor Dave…
For most of us, prayer doesn’t exactly come to mind when we think about “taking action.” And yet, that is exactly where prayer will often lead. God doesn’t only want to get us alone in a prayer closet to speak to us (although He does!) God wants to get us into the world to speak through us! Prayer is how that happens. We get God’s heart for people in prayer. God gives us words to say and directions for the day. And best of all, God promises that prayer is how He’ll stay with us through it all. Today, actively pray throughout the day by trying a breath prayer or listening prayer. Breath prayers are short phrases - the first is said while breathing in, the second while breathing out. This is one way to “pray constantly” in every circumstance as 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, and helps us to live every moment in and with Him. Listening prayer is actively stopping in order to recognize God’s presence with us by being still, quiet, and unhurried. In those moments, focus your thoughts on God instead of on your to-do list or your worries. Prayer isn’t just what we say, it’s a conversation with God! In 1 Samuel 3:10, Samuel says, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” Jesus taught us that those who know Him listen to His voice in John 10:4 & 27. Today, pause to pray and listen… and then act!
LIVE. Use these questions to help you reflect on today’s reading. It’s ok if you don’t answer every question every day! Then, try praying in the posture of prayer you read about each day.
1 | Where is prayer present in today’s main passage?
2 | What is happening before, during, or after the prayer?
3 | Is one person praying, or are people praying together? Who?
4 | Which postures of prayer did you notice?
Praying Facedown, Praying while Fasting, Praying while Kneeling, Praying while Mourning, Praying w/ Outstretched Arms, Praying while Sitting, Praying while Standing, Praying w/ Uplifted Eyes, Something Else?
5 | What was the answer to the prayer?
6 | How is God addressed and/or described?
7 | What did you learn about how you can pray today?
PRAY. Pray for yourself, a family member, a lifegroup/church friend, someone who doesn’t know Jesus, and the nations. Pick one each day or pray through them all every day.
