THINK. A Thought from Pastor Dave…
Following the genealogies, Chronicles moves to retelling a portion of Israel’s history under the reigns of King Saul, David, and then Solomon. We meet the first two in 1 Chronicles 10, and the contrast couldn’t be more stark. Saul, who is described as “unfaithful” in chapter 10 verse 13, was fearful and inspired fear in his followers. David, on the other hand, is described in chapter 11 verse 2 as a faithful “shepherd-ruler.” A shepherd is personally involved with, cares for, and committed to his sheep - so much so that a shepherd would lay down their life for their sheep. God is often described as a king, which begs the question: what kind of king do you believe God to be? A feared ruler-king that demands obedience and inspires fear, like Saul? Or a faithful shepherd-king like David who inspires love, commitment, and loyalty. David shows us a truth about God - faithfulness inspires faithfulness. Look at the way people responded to David’s faithful, loving leadership in these chapters. David says in chapter 12:17 that his heart is united to the people who follow him. As a result, they strongly supported him (11:10), risked their life to serve him (11:19), and were whole hearted in and single-minded their determination to bring his kingdom (12:38) . Jesus is our faithful, loving shepherd-king, whose heart is united to his people. He lays down his life for his people. Will his faithfulness to you inspire a heart response of faithfulness in you today? How?
