THINK. A Thought from Holly MacDonald
The lyrics of Temporary Home by Carrie Underwood are ringing in my ears as I read these scriptures… “This is my temporary home. It’s not where I belong. Windows and rooms that I’m passin’ through. This was just a stop, on the way to where I’m going. I’m not afraid because I know this was my temporary home.” Yep, you heard it from the country queen herself, life as we know it is temporary. We often come to that realization when faced with the death of a loved one, a diagnosis, or a sudden tragedy. However, most days, we might not give much thought to the limitedness of our time here. Paul answers a question for us about our resurrected bodies, in other words, what kind of body will we have in Heaven? Let’s be real, I’m glad someone else went first and asked the question because Paul responds with “How foolish!” (1 Cor 15:36). Maybe it’s a foolish question, but I’m thankful someone asked it so Paul could give us an answer. Here’s what I notice though, there’s no resurrection without death. It’s strange to think that the very thing we were created for – life with God eternally – must be met first with dying. Isn’t this also true in our walks with Jesus? When we are ready to begin following Him (and every day after that!), we die to ourselves (our flesh, selfishness, desires, dreams, pursuits, etc.) and Christ raises us up to follow Him and His ways. When we take our final breath here, as followers of Christ, we know the life we lose pales in comparison to the life that is coming. Paul reminds us, our bodies will be different, but they will be raised to live forever in glory and power (1 Cor 15:42-43). Even though there can be pain associated with loss, we know that great gain is coming…a life eternally with our perfect Heavenly Father free from all sorrow, pain, disappointment, and loss.
