THINK. A Thought from Pastor Mike…
(NOTE - Throughout our study of Hebrews you will see us use the phrase “the writer of Hebrews”. We are not trying to be clever, we just really don’t know who wrote this letter. Some believe it was penned by Paul, but many others doubt that due to its stylistic differences compared to Paul’s known works.)
The writer of Hebrews begins by stating clearly that Jesus was/is superior to angels. It might sound a little silly to us that this needed clarification, but we have the benefit of hind sight. At the time this letter was likely written, the Christian movement was in its infancy and there were likely a lot of theories as to who Jesus was and how he was able to do the miraculous things he did. The Jewish people had several stories in their historical writings about angels who came to earth to speak with authority and/or perform supernatural acts, so the thought that Jesus could have been a powerful angel is not crazy. But the writer clearly demonstrates Jesus’ superiority by using God’s own words about Jesus. We can trust follow Jesus because he was part of the creation process of this entire world, he is the redeemer of all through his sacrifice on the cross, and he sits at God’s right hand in power (per today’s reading).
LIVE. One practical way to understand and apply the Bible is the SOS method. Ask…
S: What does this passage say about God, and what does it say about me?
O: What am I being invited to obey?
S: What can I share with those around me?
PRAY. Pray for yourself, a family member, a lifegroup/church friend, someone who doesn’t know Jesus, and the nations. Pick one each day or pray through them all every day.
SHARE. Stay focused with a friend! Invite them to text “FOCUS” to (586) 200-6277.
Stay focused on Jesus today, and make it a great one!
