THINK. A Thought from Pastor Mike…
In the reading from John today, Jesus hits us with this paradox: ”The one who loves his life will lose it, and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” Deep. Let’s talk about this…
Is it bad to “love your life”? From the standpoint of being glad you’re alive and being thankful for what you have, of course not. In context, Jesus was talking about his coming crucifixion, so what he is saying is that if he were to love his own life more than ours, and did not allow himself to be sacrificed for our sins, he would have failed his mission. But, because he “hated his life”, meaning he put us first, he was glorified and we were saved. Our sins were buried with him that we might rise to eternal life with him!
If we accept this truth that Jesus is our Lord and we choose to serve him, then he calls us to follow him. We too, therefore, should follow his example of putting others first. This Christmas season is a great time to practice this. Who can you bless in these next few weeks? What can you sacrifice in order to bring life and hope into someone else’s life?
LIVE. One practical way to understand and apply the Bible is the SOS method. Ask…
S: What does this passage say about God, and what does it say about me?
O: What am I being invited to obey?
S: What can I share with those around me?
PRAY. Pray for yourself, a family member, a lifegroup/church friend, someone who doesn’t know Jesus, and the nations. Pick one each day or pray through them all every day.
TALK. That was our take on today’s reading - what’s yours? Share thoughts and ask questions in the forum.
SHARE. Stay focused with a friend! Invite them to text “FOCUS” to (586) 200-6277.
Stay focused on Jesus today, and make it a great one!
